Champagne de Bois

Champagne de Bois is an effervescent perfume with sparkling aldehydic topnotes, a touch of spicy clove, and a rich, woodsy base composed of sandalwood, amber, labdanum, and vetiver. It's long-lasting with lovely, soft sillage.

Perfumer's Comments:: When making Champagne de Bois, I started with an accord I’d created that I loved and wanted to flesh out into a full perfume. It was woodsy and a little sweet and spicy. I found that blending it with several aldehydes really made it sparkle and thus the idea for Champagne de Bois was born. My initial version had cedar, but I eliminated the cedar and reduced one of the aldehydes to create this later version; I think it's smoother and prettier this way.

Fragrance Notes: aldehydes, jasmine, clove, sandalwood, labdanum absolute, vetiver, amber. Released June 2008.

Aldehydes are organic compounds with a terminal carbonyl group. Many of them have hints of citrus as well as floral tones, and in fact they are found naturally in citrus peels. They are best when highly diluted and can add lift and a bubbly effervescence to perfumes.

Clove flower
Cloves are the dried flowers of the tree Syzygium aromaticum, native to Indonesia. The evergreen trees grow to 10-20 m tall and bear crimson flowers that are harvested and dried for clove spice and clove essential oil. The main constituent in clove responsible for its aroma is eugenol, and various synthetic eugenol aroma ingredients are available.

Santalum album from Mysore is considered to be the finest sandalwood available, but it is endangered and alternatives are more often used. Natural options include plantation grown sandalwood from Tamil Nadu, Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum), and Vanuatu or New Caladonian sandalwood (Santalum austrocaledonicum). Fine synthetic substitutes are frequently added to the plantation grown woods to create sandal accords without the endangered Mysore wood.
