Tobacco plants are herbacious perennials with flowers that range from white to pink. Many varieties are grown in cottage garden borders for their richly scented flowers.

Tobacco absolute is a nicotine-free, thick, strongly scented greenish brown liquid made from the Nicotiana tabacum plant. Perfumers also use many synthetic ingredients with tobacco nuances to accent tabac accords, and a few very beautiful but expensive synthetics are available with rich and lasting tobacco notes. Tobacco has been a popular note in perfumery and is found in many fragrances, from earlier classic fragrances like Caron's Tabac Blond released in 1919 to recent takes on the theme such as Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanilla released in 2007.
